Pear
Pear engagement rings are less prevalent than most cuts, which is surprising because we think pears always look amazing on-hand. Pears can be tricky to get right (more on that later), but if you are dedicated to finding the pearfect pear, we’re here to help.

Pears are essentially a hybrid of a round and marquise diamonds. One of the cool things about pears is their versatility. You literally have the option to wear it two ways; pointy section facing away, or toward you. If you’re not feeling it one day, you can get a whole new look by simply flipping it around.
There are other benefits to getting a pretty pear cut stone. First off, less demand means lower prices, so if a bigger stone is your thing, you can definitely go up in size and still get a good deal. One big thing to watch out for when shopping for a pear cut is the length to width ratio. Like an oval cut, if you don’t choose the recommended ratios, the pear might look too squished, or too elongated.
The ideal ratio is between 1.45:1 and 1.55:1 and you’ll want to pay attention to the depth and table percentages, since if they aren’t cut properly, you’ll get the dreaded bowtie effect (see more about this in Oval stones). You are almost guaranteed to have a slight bow tie effect regardless of the dimensions (we think it gives the diamond some extra personality), but you definitely want to avoid a super obvious bow-tie that affects the optics.
If you are getting a stone that is 1 carat or below, a G or H color should be fine. Given that this is another fancy cut, it does tend to hold color a little more than most cuts, so if you are going big, we think it’s important to stay close to the “colorless” range (D,E,F).
Since this is a brilliant stone, inclusions will often be hidden by the flashes of reflecting light. Feel free to go as low as SI1, fine just make sure it’s totally eye clean.
Aim for:
- Ideal ratio between 1.45:1 and 1.55:1
- Depth percentage between 58%-62%
- Color (1 carat and below): G or H
- Color (1 carat and above): D, E, F
- Lowest Clarity: SI1
